Opened in 1872, Westwood State School recently celebrated being open for 140 years. Our school has archived its history with the community embracing its past, present and future.
Our school is also staffed with a part-time administration officer, cleaner, specialist music teacher and groundsman. Our classrooms are well equipped, students having a range of different Information communication technology (ICT) including two interactive whiteboards, a bank of iPads in sync to apple tv, digital cameras, laptops for each student and interactive television screen.
Being a small school, Westwood State School is able to provide explicit learning experiences in small groups which meet students needs. These learning experiences are delivered through an experienced teaching principal and two teacher aides. The school has also started ‘CAFÉ’ reading, a reading program that focuses the core reading skills of comprehension, accuracy, fluency and extended vocabulary. Students receive targeted teaching on areas in which they need to develop in their reading and receive feedback on different strategies they employ while reading.
Westwood State School is also developing a strong culture around student attendance. Students realise the importance of school as every day counts.
Westwood State School's responsible behaviour plan was recently reviewed. A feature of this plan is the incorporation of deliberate strategies to teach values, responsibility, citizenship, resilience and self-esteem. There is minimal bullying at our school.
Westwood State School is an important part of the community, and is a friendly and happy place where students enjoy their learning.
